SUBMITTED BY:  LAURA JOHNSON, R.N., MANAGER

LOCATION:

Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN) is comprised of two acute care hospitals.  Manchester Memorial Hospital (MMH) 71 Haynes Street, Manchester, CT 06040 and Rockville General Hospital (RGH) 31 Union Street, Vernon, CT 06066.

PROGRAMS:

Both hospitals offer PHS II and PHS III Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab.  The Rockville Hospital campus also works in conjunction with Visiting Nurse & Health Services of CT, Inc. to provide Home Cardiac Rehab services to home bound area residents.  In addition, RGH also provides contracted Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Rehab services to three area skilled nursing facilities.

EQUIPMENT:

Both hospitals have treadmills, bikes, arm ergometers, rowing machines and airdynes.  Additionally, RGH also has a stair stepper and a Maxicam weight machine.  Hand weights are used during warm-ups at both facilities.  We use the ScottCare Telemetry System with 8 monitors at both campuses.

EDUCATION:

Patient education is provided by the nursing staff at every session following cool down.  A rotating, monthly calendar is utilized to insure that all topics are covered.  Guest lecturers include the Pharmacist and the Dietician.  The Hospital Chaplain delivers the Advanced Directives discussion in the Pulmonary Rehab program.

SCHEDULE:

PHS II Cardiac Rehab classes are offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at both hospitals.  At MMH the classes run from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; RGH holds classes from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Both facilities reserve some time in the afternoon for patient assessments and monthly staff meetings.

PHS II Pulmonary Rehab is a 90 minute class held on Monday and Friday at both centers.

PHS III Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at both facilities.

STAFFING:

Both hospitals are staffed by Registered Nurses, two full time and six part time.  We have five per diem nurses as well as two additional nurses who cross train from the Stress Lab at both hospitals.  We also have a part time Administrative Assistant.

STUDENTS:

We have nursing students from UCONN and Exercise Science students from various colleges and universities completing their practicum and internship programs.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION:

Both hospitals engage in employee and community health fairs and screenings.  We also provide lectures to area companies.

CELEBRATIONS:

Rockville General Hospital holds an annual holiday gathering at a local restaurant which is always well attended.  The patients really look forward to this event.  It’s not unusual for many of them to inquire about the date and time months in advance.

The Manchester Memorial Hospital staff host an annual February heart month luncheon for their patients which is equally anticipated and enjoyed.  This summer they are celebrating the 100th birthday of one of their long term PHS III patients.

CERTIFICATION:

The Cardiac Rehab Programs at both hospitals have been AACVPR certified since 2000.
